The coin is issued on the occasion of 190th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko, an outstanding Ukrainian poet (1814-1861) and is made on motives of his poems

On the coin obverse in the centre there is the small National Emblem of Ukraine is depicted against the background of a rushnyk (towel) with an ornamentation holographic depiction (on the left); to the right from the Emblem there are mallow flowers. Above there is the semicircular inscription: УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); beneath in three lines - 20 ГРИВЕНЬ 2004 (20 Hryvnia/2004), as well as - designation of the metal, its fineness and the coin weight in fineness. There is also the Mint logotype of the Bank of Ukraine
On the coin reverse there is depicted the portrait of Taras Shevchenko with facsimile, on the both sides of the portrait there is a composition consisting of characters of his poems; there are the semicircular inscriptions: above - НЕ ВМИРАЄ ДУША НАША (`Our Spirit Never Can be Downed`) beneath - НЕ ВМИРАЄ ВОЛЯ (`Our Striving To Be Free`).
