The coin is dedicated to Volodymyr Korolenko (27.07.1853 - 25.12.1921), a writer, publicist, public figure and humanist, who was born in the town of Zhytomyr. The writer`s life and creative work is closely associated with the Ukrainian people and its culture. In his stories and tales `The noise of the forest`, `The Judgement Day`, `In a bad company`, `The blind musician`, `Paradox`, `Makar`s dream` he depicts the spiritual beauty of the Ukrainian people, the beauty of the Ukrainian nature and the way of life of the Ukrainian people.
On the coin obverse an open book is depicted, above which there is the small National Emblem of Ukraine and inscriptions: УКРАЇНА (above in semicircle), 2003, (Ukraine /2003) 2 ГРИВНІ (2 /hryvnia) (beneath), as well as the Mint logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine
On the coin reverse there is a portrait of V.Korolenko and on both sides - the four-line inscription: ВОЛОДИМИР (Volodymyr) (on the left), КОРОЛЕНКО (Korolenko) (on the right) and 1853-1921 - his years of life (beneath in two lines).
